What is Yoga?
Some think that Yoga
is merely stretching; it is that and so much more. During a session
you will focus on your breathing while going through various
postures that help you to relax, strengthen muscles, and increase
stamina. You will gain mental focus as well, as you maintain these
postures. And while the postures won’t change, what you bring to
them each day that you practice is different, so it never gets
boring.
How many times per week should I practice Yoga?
Even if you practice
only for one hour each week, you will experience benefits. Two to
three times per week is a great goal, but do what you can and
simply enjoy it. Your practice will take shape over time, and
you’ll be able to discern what feels right for you as far as how
often you should practice.
What if I'm not flexible (or I'm overweight, etc.)?
Don’t wait; come
exactly as you are now. The practice will help with flexibility,
etc. Yoga is for everyone, and everyone is welcome here.
Is there a cardio benefit to Yoga?
The cardio/Yoga
question is an interesting one. There certainly can be a
calorie-burning benefit to maintaining a Yoga practice, but if, for
instance, your goal is to lose a large amount of weight fairly
quickly, it’s probably not realistic to expect that Yoga alone will
bring that about.
A regular Yoga practice certainly can increase lung capacity. Many athletes, for example, runners, find that adding Yoga to such a calorie-burning activity brings about much smoother runs, with better body alignment and less wear on the body. And many runners decide to decrease their running altogether as they incorporate more Yoga into their fitness routine.
So in answer to Yoga being a cardiovascular activity, if you equate cardiovascular activity with increased heart rate, sometimes yes, it is cardiovascular; sometimes no, it’s not. Going through poses at a faster pace can certainly elevate heart rate, while going through poses at a slower pace can increase strength, stamina, etc. But Yoga, overall, improves heart health, and brings about agility and well-being to do all kinds of things in all areas of your life.

Are your sessions suited to beginners?
Yes! Our instructors have worked with
a very wide range of individuals for many years, from first-timers
to seasoned practicioners. During a class, they can suggest
multiple ways to perform the postures so that you can gain the
fullest benefits, regardless of your level.
How can I prepare for a class?
It’s a good idea not
to come with a full stomach, as you’ll be bending, twisting, etc.
If you think you’ll get hungry, try a very light snack about 30
minutes-1 hour before class.
Please do not wear scents, such as perfume or cologne, to class.
Please turn off all beepers and cell phones before class.

How do I pay for classes?
The easiest way is to
simply pay online by clicking on any of the "add to cart" buttons
on this page. Or you can download our payment form from
HERE, fill it out and turn it in to
the instructor when you show up for class.
You can also call Bekki at 968-7365 to provide your credit card information over the phone, or to arrange to pay by cash or check.
If you buy a series of 5 or more classes, you will receive an email reminder when you have only 2 classes left.

What should I wear, and bring, to class?
Stick with comfortable
clothing that doesn’t constrict your movement, so, for example,
jeans are not a good idea. Loose-fitting shorts or sweat-type
clothing is fine. Certainly don’t worry about what you look like.
You’ll slip off your shoes and practice barefoot.
You certainly may bring a yoga mat and Yoga strap if you have these items, but we have mats, straps, and blocks. If you want to bring some bottled water for after class, that’s fine.

When should I arrive at class?
Arrive 5-10 minutes
before class in order to sign in and get yourself prepared and
situated on your mat. Arriving a bit early also shows respect for
others who are coming in and centering themselves in preparation to
practice. Please do enter a Yoga class after it has begun.
If you need to pay for Yoga, it’s best to do that ahead of time (online or via phone), but if you must pay immediately before class, please show up 15 minutes before class to fill out paperwork.

I'm pregnant; can I practice Yoga?
Yes, you can start a
Yoga practice during any trimester of pregnancy. Great changes
occur in the body during pregnancy, and Yoga is a great way to slow
down and appreciate these changes. Some of the benefits include
relief from back pain, improved sleep and digestion, muscle
strengthening, and increased flexibility. The meditation side of
Yoga can reduce anxiety and help you to feel less stress and more
peace during your pregnancy. The breathing meditations practiced in
a Yoga class also help during labor and delivery!
How will I know if a class is cancelled?
It is rare that a
class is cancelled without advance notice, but emergencies do
happen. Please check this page before coming to each class, as it
will have the most up-to-date information on any
cancellations.
